Lawn Care
Nutsedge:
Nutsedge are perennial weeds that superficially resemble grasses.
Nutsedge reproduce by underground tubers that are attached to underground stems. Nutsedge leaves are thicker and stiffer than most grasses, are V-shaped in cross-section, and arranged in sets of three from the base rather than sets of two as found in grass leaves. Yellow Nutsedge stems grow to 3 feet tall and its leaves are light green, with pointed tips, and have spikelets that are straw-colored to gold-brown with many flowers.
They thrive in waterlogged soil, and their presence often indicates drainage is poor, irrigation is too frequent, or sprinklers are leaky. Once established, however, they will tolerate normal irrigation conditions or drought.
Nutsedges are a problem in lawns because they grow faster, have a more upright growth habit, and are a lighter green color than most grass species, resulting in a non uniform turf. The best approach for avoiding Nutsedge problems is to prevent establishment of the weed in the first place. Prevent establishment by removing small plants before they develop tubers and eliminating the oversaturated conditions that favor Nutsedge growth.
Pre-emergent herbicides are effective in eliminating plants that have not developed tubers; unfortunately this herbicide may be detrimental to turf grass. Post emergent selective herbicide applied at the appropriate time of the plants life cycle is an effective means of elimination, but again this herbicide may be detrimental to turf grass. A non-selective herbicide (spot spraying technique) application, and or tuber extraction, is the most effective means of complete elimination of Nutsedge.
Please remember, no matter what species of weed we are dealing with, maintaining a healthy strong turf in Hudson and River Falls through proper turf mowing, fertilization and herbicide applications and appropriate watering is the best and most effective means in controlling all weeds.
